Old Hays County Jail
San Marcos, Texas

The first phase of this project is its stabilization that consisted of selective demolition of decayed existing roof framing and metal panels, and deteriorated masonry components were performed. Salvageable elements of the front porch structure were removed, documented and stored for rehabilitation and reconstruction during future Restoration phase. New roof framing was installed when masonry work was completed. New galvanized metal ‘roll and cap’ roofing to match the original was installed. A new frieze trim was installed and painted, per field tests determining original colors. The building is not habitable at this point, but is structurally stable and ‘in the dry.’ During the next proposed phase of work (Restoration), existing windows and doors will be rebuilt or created, the porch and porch roof will be reconstructed and the interior restoration will be completed.
